Business is changing

There’s a need to be deliberate about the way we think, innovate and problem solve.

As expectations from customers and employees reach new heights, it’s becoming obvious that satisfying people is your most important key performance indicator. But moving the needle to be better is not easy. Especially in many of the old ways of thinking and working.

To stay relevant, organizations require innovation, the ability to redefine problems and a solution-based approached to function in a way that’s nimble, fast and effective for your bottom line. It requires a new way to think and a new way to work.

This is where design thinking comes in and where Tesani can help.

How does design thinking work?

Design thinking is certainly a popular buzzword within many organizations and across industries, but it’s not always easily understood.

What’s important to know is that beyond the buzz, there are real methods and approaches that can help organizations to respond quickly to increasingly complex challenges through innovative solutions that are effective, feasible and viable.

At the heart of it is to truly understand the user or customer, relentlessly redefine problems, challenge assumptions and identify alternate solutions and strategies that may not exist on the surface. It presents a more effective way of thinking and working focusing on innovation and solving problems.

Design thinking is iterative but often non-linear. However, it can most commonly involve four phases that are key to a successful idea or solution.

Each phase uses a vast variety of methods, tools and approaches that ensures each organization is getting the most of the process to fit their unique environment and situation.

Core Principles of Design Thinking

Not every business challenge is the same and certainly every environment is different. Design thinking is not simply plug and plan as each initiative will take on a different approach.

In spite of the that, no matter how you apply design thinking, there are five principles that are foundational to the practice.

User-centred

A focus on empathy for people and their needs

More action and less talk

Understanding and validation through doing as opposed to meeting

Experimentation

Learning through prototyping drives decision making

Collaboration

Ensure the best solutions and ease of alignment through co-creation

Holistic

Consider everything in the environment and journey of people and their needs.

“Most people make the mistake of thinking design is what it looks like. People think it’s this veneer—that the designers are handed this box and told, ‘Make it look good!’ That’s not what we think design is. It’s not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.”
